Cancer Reporting Tool - Official Statistics

Updated 19th December 2024

An error has been identified when calculating rates within the deprivation analysis for the following official statistics releases:

  • Cancer mortality in Wales, 2002-2022

The error occurred because the incorrect domain was used to assign Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation (WIMD) to the denominator (mid-year population estimate). The error does not affect the numerator (number of events). We do not expect significant changes at the Wales level. We apologise for any inconvenience. Please see the April 2024 statement of corrections document below for more information.

An error in the grouping of neck cancer has also been identified where cancer of the larynx was not included as stated. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. Please see the July 2024 Statement of Corrections document below for more information.

The new cancer reporting tool holds Official Statistics for cancer incidence, mortality, and survival in Wales for the years 2002 onwards. It is an interactive dashboard that allows you to explore the data in different ways such as, for example: time series analysis, geographical area profiles, stage at diagnosis, area deprivation, comparisons with other UK nations and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The tool also includes new experimental statistics showing monthly cancer pathology samples up to 2024, allowing a more rapid, timely insight into cancer incidence in Wales.
