The Welsh Cancer Intelligence & Surveillance Unit (WCISU) is the National Cancer Registry for Wales and its primary role is to record, store and report on all incidence of cancer for the resident population of Wales wherever they are treated. Cancer registration in Wales began almost five decades ago and today’s electronic database which holds records going back to 1972 contains in the region of 686,000 records.
Identifiable patient data is never released from the registry without appropriate ethical approval and the registry will never contact individual patients or their relatives.
WCISU is a full member of the United Kingdom and Ireland Association of Cancer Registries (UKIACR) who work together to ensure both National and International standards for cancer registration are maintained.

Provide appropriate information on cancer for ad hoc queries.
Publish scientific reports and papers relating to cancer
Facilitate planning of cancer services for prevention, diagnosis, cure and care.
Review activities and programmes of the Registry regularly to ensure the provision of high quality data on cancer.
