A newly created infant feeding role in neonates and paediatrics

Nicky Bennett,  Cardiff and Vale University Health Board

From a background of very limited infant feeding support hours within the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) this new role was established with the aim of independent BFI accreditation for both NICU and the children’s hospital.

CVUHB is currently unique in Wales in having dedicated infant feeding leadership in paediatrics.

Early success for the job sharing leads includes the introduction of a nutrition round for the most vulnerable babies and quality improvement resulting in a significant increase in expressed breast milk (EBM) volumes on day ten.

Future aims include collaboration across services to provide a seamless service for families.
