Intervention:
Three moderate quality studies evaluated cycling demonstration town interventions. These aimed to stimulate levels of cycling through a multicomponent approach. Components included upgrades to physical infrastructure (such as new cycling facilities) to increase access to public transport, or within schools, and behaviour change elements such as cycle training schemes and promotional marketing. One study also included ‘Bike it’ officers in schools.
Evidence quality:
All three studies reported increases in cycling for active travel to work or school, although the statistical significance was unclear in one study.
Generalisability:
Two of the studies were conducted in the UK and one was conducted in the USA. Therefore, the interventions could be partially generalisable to Wales, but the contextual environment of the different countries should be considered.
If proceeding with this intervention:
It is suggested that a detailed examination of the evidence base is conducted, taking into account intervention context, to support design and implementation. A thorough evaluation of impact should also be conducted.
