Infant feeding skills development for students of midwifery and child nursing

Anneka Bell, Swansea University

A practical approach to teaching skills around breastfeeding  support was developed for first year midwifery students.

Students are supported to complete a practical workbook alongside university based training and assessed by Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) with a 100% pass rate last year.

Uniquely paediatric nursing students are being taught alongside the midwifery students and paramedic students have also been included, with a focus on facilitating skin to skin and the first feed at community births.
